Meanwhile, WSC wrote, “she worked in the German hospitals, rendering the merciful and tender service of a nurse to those upon whom, in another capacity, she sought to bring death and ruin.” McKenna held both the German Iron Cross and French and Belgian decorations for gallantry. “Her tale is a thrilling one,” Churchill writes herein. “Having begun it, I could not put out my light till four o’clock in the morning.” Her book, “I was a Spy” (B50, 1932), revived “the hazards of the Great War, although its bitterness has faded, as it ought to fade, with time.”
