Baltic historians tend to see British prewar policy toward Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in a narrow light. They want to see Britain coldly abandoning the Baltics to Soviet rule and so that is what they find. Churchill however, would resist recognizing the Sovietized Baltic even when it was to his advantage after Russia joined the Allied forces in late 1941 and 1942.

This charge has haunted Churchill since 1915. Lehrman examines Churchill and Roosevelt through the teams they assembled: advisers, political officials and military leaders who worked for victory even as they argued over war strategy. His is not a history of the war, but an evaluation of people, decisions and events, a victory followed by a lost peace and decades of Cold War. A useful chronology and extensive endnotes, bibliography, and index are complemented by portrait photographs used as chapter headings, and two key appendices: a 1940 Roosevelt fireside chat, and Churchill’s victory speech in 1945.

Among the few foreign statesmen to champion independence for the Baltic States, Churchill faced stiff opposition from war-weary colleagues in the 1920s.

The longest biography in history takes a long step to completion with publication of The Churchill Documents, Vol. 19, Fateful Questions, September 1943-April 1944. Fastidiously compiled by the late Sir Martin Gilbert and edited by Dr. Larry Arnn, these 2700 pages serve up another fresh contribution of documents crucial to our understanding of Churchill in World War II. It is a vast new contribution to Churchill scholarship.

The historian Geoffrey Best wrote that King George V prevented Churchill (as First Lord of the Admiralty in 1911-15) from naming battleships after Cromwell and Pitt. I knew about Cromwell, but why Pitt and which one?

Among the important figures of the 20th century, Churchill and Einstein competed with each other for the distinction of being labeled “Person of the Century” by Time magazine. At first sight they seemed different in almost all respects. Yet to some extent they had similar personalities and over time their thinking developed in not entirely different ways. They also liked each other—from the time they first met in 1933 at Chartwell, Churchill’s country estate.

Avoid telling people “I told you so,” said Churchill, who resisted “rubbing it in,” even when he was proved right.

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh has the first copy. The Duke of Marlborough has the second, and Sir Winston Churchill’s great-grandson Randolph (who wrote the foreword) ordered eight as Christmas presents. You should have one, if you are a total-immersion Churchillian with a penchant for the extraordinary, for Winston’s Island, the Isle of Wight, has its unique claim to a place in the saga.

Irish self-determination is something Churchill is alleged to have opposed. The truth is quite different. Readers will do well to understand the nuances.
