It is important to remember that Churchill’s views on Islam were nuanced, and quite different from run-of-the-mill Englishmen of his time. Indeed, he caused many of his contemporaries, imbued as they were with Victorian Britain’s sense of Manifest Destiny, to regard him as a dangerous radical. HIs words matter today, not as contemporary critiques but as commentaries on the unchanging nature of man.

None of the leading Churchill misquotes seems to be famous in German. In our language, the best known one is the supposed quip when Churchill was asked for his recipe for a long life: “First of all: no sports!” Another attributed to Churchill is “I believe only such statistics that I have forged myself.”

Ever since the producers of “The Wilderness Years” television documentary (1982) took liberties by suggesting that Wigram was a suicide, it has been broadly accepted as fact. Indeed recently another myth was layered on to this one: that Wigram’s parents didn’t attend his funeral in Sussex because suicide was proscribed by the Church.

Painting was virtually suspended during World War II, but Churchill took it up immediately after he was dismissed by the electorate in 1945. He made painting visits Lord Beaverbrook’s villa, “La Capponcina,” and in the mid-Fifties he was actively seeking a place of his own on the Riviera.
