Q: In review­ing the 1940-45 vis­i­tors books at Che­quers, I was struck by how often Pro­fes­sor Freder­ick Lin­de­mann was there—far more than any­one except Churchill fam­ily and staff, more than Bracken and Beaver­brook, let alone the Chiefs of Staff. Lin­de­mann prac­ti­cally lived there and was present when­ever Churchill was. What do you make of him and what's best to read on him?

The atomic bomb, in its immediate aftermath, was regarded by many as just another weapon of war. Churchill him­self spoke pri­vately of using it. But with the arrival of the hydro­gen bomb, Churchill’s thoughts became apoc­a­lyp­tic. These are his words on war and peace in the nuclear age.

Churchill usu­ally comes in for (and deserves) some of the blame for the tragic failure of the Gallipoli Peninsula landings, but rarely does every­body “get it right.” Churchill's reasons for the attack and his subsequent exoneration from blame casts a different light on the Dardanelles-Galipoli affair.

Churchill's rep­u­ta­tion as a war­rior tends to obscure his efforts for peace, but from the time he was a young Mem­ber of Par­lia­ment, already pos­sessed of expe­ri­ence in war on three con­ti­nents, Churchill spoke of the fright­ful­ness of mod­ern war and strove to avoid it.

“The idea that Winston Churchill wanted to covert to Islam is utter tripe,” tweets the historian Andrew Roberts. This has not prevented the National Post from claiming that he did, in a December 2014 edition.

"Watching the horrifying events in Paris this week," wrote Scott Johnson, "I have found Churchill’s great speech of November 12, 1936, coming to mind. It is one of Churchill’s prophetic speeches—I believe in the Prophet Churchill—decrying the complacency of the government in the face of the gathering storm in Germany. . . ."
